THE NEW (2025) SUPERMAN MOVIE IS A REFRESHING CHANGE IN THE SUPERHERO FILM GENRE AND IN THE DC FILM UNIVERSE I just saw the new film Superman with my wife Ruth today. I highly recommend that people see it. James Gunn has restored the fun in the super hero genre. Is it perfect? No, but the cast is great and the chemistry between Clark and Lois sizzles. However, the plot, which occasionally falters, is not hard to follow. There are also some interesting twists on Superman's Kryptonian parents and the side villains. This is the most comic book accurate movie I have seen since Matt Reeves "The Batman." In fact, it is even more true to DC comics than the excellent Christopher Reeve alliteration from the 1970's and 80's. I loved the portrayals of Mr Terrific, Guy Gardner's Green Lantern and Hawk Girl. Krypto the super dog was a total hoot and an important character in the film. The portrayal of Lex Luther is one note but it is a heck of a one, that makes him an unabashed villain. I have been watching reviews from many folks on YouTube that I generally trust, but I have to admit, I am disappointed in them. They seem to have a tribal loyalty to the Zack Snyder version of DC characters that strikes me as unreasonable. It reminds of their same tribal loyalty to the Christopher Nolan alliteration of Batman. Frankly, while I think that the Snyder version of Superman was well scripted, well acted and fleshed out by Henry Cavill; I never really liked it.Many didn't. Snyder presented Superman as a brooding, conflicted and morally ambiguous hero. David Corenswet, who portrays the hero in the Gunn film is someone we have always recognized Superman to be. A person who was committed to doing good and raised by midwestern parents to value life, and decency. The scene between Clark and his father brought me to tears. It is the character and humanity of Clark Kent, more than anything else, which makes Superman a hero. This is the Superman we have loved from the comics, the Fliescher animated films, The radio show, various TV programs, the Saturday morning cartoon "The Super friends" (whose Justice League building is used in the Gunn film), The Animated Series, and the various Justice League animated shows. The fact that this picture of the man of steel raises any controversy at all, says more about the cynical times in which we live, in my opinion, than it does about James Gunn or his presentation of the hero. In fact, in many ways, the most eloquent and relevant message of the film is the deep desire that many of us have for moral clarity and to see popular heroes like Superman embody it, as he is shown in this Gunn film. This film is a great escape and a reminder of the inspiration that we want from our cinema. Is this super hero movie groundbreaking? No, but is it a breath of fresh air? Absolutely yes. Go see it and have fun!
